This is what smart people say: "Significant wind and flooding damage was reported across much of the island of Newfoundland as Igor passed just to the east. Many communities had to declare a state of emergency and some parts of the community of Clarenville were evacuated due to flooding. 238 mm (9.37 inches) of rain fell on the Burin Peninsula at St. Lawrence, making Hurricane Igor at least the third wettest tropical cyclone to be recorded in Canada; roads and bridges were completely washed away as well. The Bonavista Peninsula and Avalon Peninsula were also hard hit, with severe flooding in many communities in those areas as well. Power outages were also reported in many communities in eastern Newfoundland as a result of the strong winds. Damage in Newfoundland is estimated in the tens of millions of dollars, but no exact figure was available. One person is missing from Random Island after reportedly being swept out to sea."

House painting

September, 2010 @ Cathedral str. All the members of this Montréal afro-pop group are singersongwriters; elements of their various influences are smoothly blended with African rhythms to create fresh songs in a unique style. Masterful a capella singing sets them apart on the vast soundscape of world music.H’sao’s journey begins in their native Chad. Initially, the group is made up of the Rimtobaye brothers and sister: Caleb, Mossbass, Taroum, and Israel. Their father dubs them Hirondelle (‘swallow’) in honour of the birds that are always searching for higher ground; their first singing is done in the church where he is the pastor. Their first performance outside of church is in 1994, when they take part in the ''Fête de la Musique'', a presentation of the Centre Culturel Français (French cultural center) in N’Djamena. H’sao starts building their fan base at this first of a long string of shows. In 1995, Charles and Service Ledjebgue join the band and with their arrival the group takes on a new name: H’sao—H for hirondelle and Sao in honour of their Chadian ancestors. But whatever you want to call them, they are sure to make you move. Touted as one of the vanguards of funk revival, they have been playing the Toronto club scene since 1999 and now boast three releases of original material out on the band-owned label Sleeping Eddie Music (20 MILES FROM BUFFALO -2008, THE ALI SHUFFLE-1999, and ELASTICITY-2001).In recent years, PE have made appearances as an opening act for Maceo Parker, K-OS, Maestro, and Joey DeFrancesco. While there he came into contact with the beautiful world of John Wyre (Nexus), which opened him up to the endlessly inspirational world of sound in all its forms.James landed on New Englandʼs Puritan shores in August 2008 to further his quest of musical (and personal) enlightenment. He attended the New England Conservatory in the studio of Alexander Korsantia, from which he graduated in May 2010 with a Masters in Classical Piano Performance. During his period here, James worked with some of the foremost music educators of today such as Bruce Brubaker, Ran Blake, Anthony Coleman and Danilo Perez, along with many others which helped him shape and define his style and concept of music. Her parents often held socials that always included everyone singing and playing and Lori was usually the little star. Lori went on as a classically trained pianist to complete a B.Mus and B.Mus. Ed. from Memorial University's School of Music. Through the encouragement of friends and blues masters Roger Howse and Wade Pinhorn, Lori put teaching on hold and chose a life of rock & roll. As keyboardist for The Thomas Trio & Red Albino, Lori toured extensively and even competed in a World Talent Competition located in Tokyo representing Canada in front of 13,000 people. In 1991 Lori traded in her life on the road and resumed her other passion teaching. To this day Lori has managed to successfully fill the roles of teacher, school manager, mother and working musician. Along the way Lori has played keys for folk music icon’s The Plankerdown Band, continues to play synth and percussion for musical productions, adjudicates music festivals and has evolved into a prominent member of music education in Newfoundland. In ’96 Lori was encouraged to sing at a Sunday night blues jam by Coop De Ville’s, Wade Pinhorn and Darrell Cooper. Darrell heard a “soulful voice” and asked Lori to special guest with his band. He handpicked a song list and Lori got a taste of the blues which quickly led to a thirst!Lori leads her own band aptly named The Lori Cooper Band and they fill the dance floor at the Fat Cat Blues Bar in St. John’s, Newfoundland on a regular basis. Her zest for life, jubilant spirit and deep love for singing the blues comes through in every song and affects every member of her audience.Lori’s biggest influences have been Etta James, Sam Cooke, Aretha Franklin and Carl Weathersby. Also look for her in Three Shades of Blue, a vocal trio that adapts classic songs of various styles and delivers them in a sweet sounding three part harmony accompanied by keyboards.

Wreckhouse International Jazz & Blues Festival Day 4 part 3

16th of July, 2010 MATT ANDERSEN @ MAJESTIC THEATRE (390 Duckworth str.) New Brunswick, Canada's Matt Andersen has a larger than life showmanship that has been earning him a fervent and steadfast audience wherever he graces the stage. Which is not surprising coming from someone who grew up in a highly musical family, living all over Canada and France, played tenor horn in the Salvation Army brass band where her parents were ministers, had an early love-affair with hip-hop music, only to wind up studying French poetry, and eventually, classical and jazz piano at McGill University. Her multiple industry accolades have landed her 2 Juno nominations (Canada’s Grammy equivalent), tours in Europe and across and North America, Japan, and most recently, a show at the legendary Hollywood Bowl with Jamie Cullum & Count Basie Orchestra. Fans and critics have drawn comparisons to the likes of Joni Mitchell, Stevie Wonder, and Rickie Lee Jones. And what these names all share is both an accessibility and a distinctness – that quality people can’t quite pin down.Depending on what the song calls for, Shepherd always draws upon her roots – be it Salvation Army origins, poetic singer-songwriter lyricism, the modal inflections of world music, simple and sassy pop, infectiously deep hip-hop grooves, or the harmonic complexities of jazz. Her tunes are always a departure from convention; yet one never has the sense of leaving the home she weaves on stage and invites us to be part of. Andrew Collins - mandolin, Brad Keller - guitar, Brian Kobayakawa - bass, John Showman - fiddle. String-band music has long been a staple of Americana. While the four members of Toronto's Creaking Tree String Quartet pay homage to that tradition, they refuse to be bound by it. Instead, the technically dazzling outfit uses fingerboards to leap stylistic boundaries and fuse intricate styles. The result is a smartly intellectual and yet deeply moving sound that's a true Canadian original: jazz forms sliding over a rootsy bluegrass base, with flashes of chamber music, reverence and avant-garde experimentation. It's the product of four adept and accomplished musicians, dedicated to performing unique and exciting material that raises the bar for instrumental acoustic music. They earned a Juno Award nomination for their 2003 debut CD. Their 2005 follow-up "Side Two" won the Pushing The Boundaries trophy at the 2005 Canadian Folk Music Awards, was named Instrumental Album of the Year at the Indie Acoustic Project Awards, and "Old Crow" won Instrumental Song of the Year at the International Acoustic Music Awards. The group's third album, "The Soundtrack," was produced by Grammy winner and Nashville veteran Bil VornDick, and is their finest work to date. Already this new release has received rave reviews, been nominated for a 2009 Juno Award, and won two Canadian Folk Music Awards, for Best Instrumentalists, and Pushing The Boundaries. The fourth, as yet untitled album is nearing completion, to be released in fall of 2010. The theme was Motown - sequined dresses, flashy suits, and dance shoes. I need to say that it was super hot in there .. i mean literally hot. But anyways girls did very good job in order to make the party happen. My respect ;)

ps. red light is not the best thing in the world for making uber kewl pics .. so don't judge me too hard. one might say: why didn't you use flashlight? She is the co-flagship of the Celebrity fleet, along with Century-class ship Century. She was originally named Constellation, but renamed in May 2007. Her three sister ships are the Celebrity Infinity, Summit, and Millennium. She was built at the Chantiers de l'Atlantique shipyard in St. Nazaire, France. The ship boasts a COGAS power plant of gas turbines and a steam turbine providing up to 60 Megawatts for the electric systems and two 19 MW Rolls-Royce/Alstom MerMaid azimuth thrusters for propulsion. In 2007, she was refitted with the addition of a diesel engine as a fuel-saving measure. The ship can run on any combination of the gas turbines or diesel. In port, she generates electrical power from the diesel.Constellation consistently receives top honors from Conde Nast's readers survey, and is currently ranked by readers as the best large cruise ship. She winters in the Caribbean and summers in Europe with port calls at popular destinations such as Boston, Massachusetts; Bridgetown, Barbados; Charlotte Amalie, US Virgin Islands; Dover, England; St. Petersburg, Russia; and Stockholm, Sweden.

Wallsaway Music And Arts Festival

29th of August, 2009 Wallsaway Music And Arts Festival @ THE ROCK HOUSE (George Street). Local musical performers included The Mountains and the Trees (recently back from a showcase at Toronto’s NXNE festival), The Subtitles (named "the 2009 ECMA buzz band" on CBC Radio's show, Drive), Soul man Chris Kirby, Singer-songwriter Ian Foster, Les Domestics, Matt Hornell and the Diamond Minds, The Sellouts, Japan Batteries, The Mudflowers, and more! The internationally renowned George Street, located in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, is a short street populated mainly by bars and pubs. It is closed to traffic all evening and most of the business day, only being open from 8:00am until noon, to allow bars to restock their goods. In the evening, the street is only open to pedestrians. It is believed that George Street has the most pubs and bars per square foot of any street in North America, and is known to have bars that are open later than most others throughout most of Canada. The street does not usually become crowded with pedestrians until later at night, around midnight, and will remain busy until early in the morning, possibly as early as 6 am, despite the absence of the sale of alcohol. There are however, many hot dog vendors and a 24 hour restaurant near by. The street is the venue for an annual Mardi Gras celebration in October, even though most celebrations of this type occur in February in other parts of the world. However, the largest celebration on George Street is the six-night George Street Festival which occurs in early August and typically concludes on the Tuesday night before the Royal St. John's Regatta, which is set for the first Wednesday in August. The festival is rumoured to be the largest of its kind in North America with over 120,000 people making their way through the streets during the six-day period.George Street was once six blocks long, but with the construction of the St. John's Convention Centre, which sits directly on top of what used to be roughly the middle of the street, the street became "George Street" and "George Street West". As such, George Street proper is now only two blocks long. George Street West is home to a number of businesses, residences and a church (and no bars or pubs), while George Street itself is the predominant home of St. John's' nightlife. She was given to the USSR in 1946 as war reparation and renamed after the early 19th century Baltic German explorer in Russian service, Adam Johann Krusenstern (1770-1846). The Kruzenshtern is the second largest ship in the Russian fleet.Of the four remaining Flying P-Liners, the Ex-Padua is the only one still in use, mainly for training purposes, with her home ports in Kaliningrad (formerly Königsberg) and Murmansk. After the Sedov, another former German ship, she is the largest traditional sailing vessel still in operation. Halifax-based Gypsophilia is a group of seven young performers whose music straddles the jazz and indie worlds. The band started in 2004 as a Django Reinhardt-inspired project, but soon found itself mixing gypsy jazz with klezmer, funk, classical music, indie rock, and bebop, writing its own tunes and playing to sold out crowds. Gypsophilia's 2007 debut record Minor Hope struck a chord with music fans across Canada, selling out of its first pressing in a matter of months, and receiving an ECMA nomination for Best Jazz Recording. The latest record, Sa-Ba-Da-OW! (June 2009), offers up even more varied sounds, self-produced and recorded in Halifax's Echo Chamber studio, engineered under the legendary hand of Charles Austin (Joel Plaskett, Buck 65, Al Tuck, Matt Mays, Super Friendz, Garrett Mason) and Dave Ewenson (Brent Randall, Laura Peek). The band’s typical lineup of three guitars, violin, double bass, trumpet and piano is bolstered on the album with synthesizer, backbeat handclaps, impromptu gang vocals, percussion, and slide whistle. Ross Burns - guitar, Sageev Oore - piano/keyboards, Matt Myer - trumpet, Nick Wilkinson - guitar, Adam Fine - double bass, Alec Frith - guitar, Gina Burgess - violin, Daniel Oore - saxaphones. BLACKBURN is a band of three brothers whose music is rich in the tradition of the blues, while inflected with R&B and soul and is electrified with an urban vibe. BLACKBURN brings it all together with conscious lyrics to create a smooth and soulful groove. BLACKBURN were brought to music through the influence of their father, highly regarded keyboard player Bobby Dean Blackburn, a seminal figure of Toronto's Blues and R&B scene in the 60s. The old man played with many of the legends in his time. Descended from fugitive slaves that escaped to Canada in the 1850's, the brothers write and perform in many soulful modes from the blues through to jazz and R&B, reflecting very beautifully upon this legacy. It is with much energy and originality that they take to the stage devoting themselves to each song and every show.

Wreckhouse International Jazz & Blues Festival Day 4 part 3

17th of July, 2009 SISTERS EUCLID @ MARTINI BAR (Above Peddler's On George Street) There are a lot of bars in Toronto. I'm not talking bistros or anywhere featuring ferns, spritzers, tablecloths or wine lists. I mean bars, where you can have a drink, shoot the breeze and hear a live band. For over a decade, the Sisters Euclid have been appearing most Monday nights in a bar called the Orbit Room. You can hear the bar bone-deep in their music and you can see it when they are making music together. They play the instruments that were heard first and mostly in bars: classic bass, Hammond organ, a few guitars. There's no double kick drums, no Marshall stacks, headset mics, dry ice or lasers. The music's loud enough but no louder than it needs to be for you to hear what the musicians are really doing-the over, under and inter-tones humans both hear and feel. This regular Monday night house gig, a great way for some musicians playing music together to turn into a band. It can bring the bread to the butter for musicians and it's a place to take chances, try things out and try them again. It institutionalizes learning new things, because the set can’t be the same every week. Every once in a very blue moon in such a setting, a band finds a new level of connection, and together they enter a musical state of grace. That's how I hear the Sisters Euclid: their music is part blue sky, part single malt and part junkyard dog, an aural gumbo that's been simmering on the stove for years. It feels good between your thighs and between your ears. All kinds of musical ideas that slap you up-side the head on first listen. It’s smart and juicy, it's rough and it's gorgeous, and when you turn it up, it can sweeten a lot of sour."

Wreckhouse International Jazz & Blues Festival Day 4 part 2

17th of July, 2009 CARLOS DEL JUNCO @ FAT CAT BLUES BAR (51 Pleasant Street) Born in Havana, Cuba, del Junco (loosely translated "of the reeds") immigrated with his family at the age of one. Not long after Brennan moved to Newfoundland in 2002, they joined forces to create the Jeff Dyer/Bill Brennan Duo and the Jeff Dyer/Bill Brennan Quintet. Their recent release is called “After Hours”, an album of classic jazz standards, Brazilian bossa nova, and original music. Joining them on the album are old friends Jim Vivian (bass), Mike Billard (drums) and Patrick Boyle (trumpet/flugelhorn). Dyer and Brennan’s musical lives are a kind-of parallel. They were both performers at a young age, cutting their teeth on CBC television. Their early stage years blossomed into careers in music performance. They spent many years in Toronto, performing on the stage, in the studio and in nightclubs. Dyer had his own CBC radio show (The Jeff Dyer Band - Live at the Hall), and Brennan has been musical director for CBC's “The Vinyl Cafe”. While pursuing different paths as performers, a love of jazz has brought Dyer and Brennan together. They have developed a sound that ranges from intimate to full-on swingin'.
